Bazaruto Island is one of 5 principal islands in the Bazaruto Archipelago, which lies just 30km off the coast of Vilanculos in Inhambane Province. It is the largest of all the islands, approximately 37m long and up to 7km wide. Bazaruto Island is the furthest away of all the islands in the archipelago, but despite its remote location, it has a history that goes way back.
The island is one of Africa's premier scuba diving destinations. The number of reef dive locations is amazing and divers are able to see: over 100 species of hard and soft corals, thousands of tropical fish species, 5 different kinds of dolphins, 4 whale species and sharks, all 5 marine sea turtle species and the largest population of the rare Dugong (sea cow).
